What does a DOT drug test screen for? +

The federal DOT testing panel covers marijuana metabolites, cocaine metabolites, amphetamines, opioids, and PCP. Testing may be required before employment, randomly, after certain accidents, for reasonable suspicion, and during return-to-duty or follow-up testing. See the official DOT employee guidance above for the complete rules.

Can a CDL driver use marijuana or CBD? +

Marijuana remains prohibited for DOT-regulated safety-sensitive employees regardless of state law or a medical-marijuana recommendation. CBD products can contain enough THC to cause a positive test, and DOT warns that CBD use is not an acceptable explanation for a confirmed positive result.

What happens after a positive DOT test or refusal? +

You must be removed from DOT safety-sensitive work. To become eligible again, you must complete the federal return-to-duty process with a qualified Substance Abuse Professional, including any prescribed education or treatment, a return-to-duty test, and follow-up testing. Your Clearinghouse record will show your status.

How long is a DOT medical certificate valid? +

A medical examiner may certify a qualified driver for up to 24 months, but can issue a shorter certificate when a condition needs monitoring. Use the National Registry link above to make sure your physical is performed by an FMCSA-certified examiner.

What appears on my PSP report? +

Your FMCSA Pre-Employment Screening Program record contains five years of crash data and three years of roadside inspection data from the Motor Carrier Management Information System. Drivers can request their own report and use FMCSA's DataQs system to seek review of incorrect federal safety data.
